Giant splash screen images

Once upon a time, web designers were fighting to include as much information as possible above the fold. That meant showing visitors all you had to offer right at the top of the screen. Now, we’re seeing a trend of huge images taking up this area instead. The focus is now on stunning photography and visuals. It’s all about making a big, striking impact. Good web design is all about that first impression.

Big, simple copy

Upon these giant images, we’re seeing just a few, precise words of copy. Web designers and copywriters have been studying how people read on the internet. It’s very different to the way we read a book or a newspaper, for example. Online, we skim read. We pick out the most important words and piece the information together. That means less is more when it comes to copy. Again, it’s all about making a striking first impression.

Clever scrolling

Infinity scrolling was 2013’s big invention. It ensured that readers never reached the end of the website. There was always more content to consume and digest. It bumped up ‘time on site’ statistics and kept readers engaged. Now we’re seeing a more creative evolution of this. Websites are now using scrolling to tell a story. It’s called parallax scrolling and it’s beautiful! Images, copy and design all interact with each other and move as the user scrolls down. It captures the imagination and intrigues visitors.

Responsive

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know we bang on about responsive web design a lot. Although this is probably too ubiquitous to be a ‘trend’ now, it’s still important. More and more websites are built to function on a smartphone, tablet and desktop perfectly. Responsive design is become the default situation for all web design.

Blocks and tiles

We can attribute the popularity of blocks and tiles to Pinterest. They helped move the world of web design away from the column format. We’re starting to see plenty of startups following suit and producing copycat tile designs. It’s a great way to absorb lots of cool content all at once. Even major newspaper websites are adopting this format. It’s all about squeezing as much content as possible into a space.

Speed, speed, speed

Web designers have always been concerned with load speed. However, now it is more important than ever. Google made a big change to the way it ranks websites recently. One of the major conditions is load speed. The faster your website appears, the better your SEO. Since then, designers have been tinkering away to shave milliseconds off their speeds!
